Historic Gift by Alumnus Kelcy Warren Bolsters UTA’s Engineering Program

The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is set to transform its resource and energy engineering landscape thanks to a groundbreaking $12 million donation from alumnus Kelcy Warren. A prominent figure in the energy sector and the executive chairman of Energy Transfer LP, Warren’s contribution marks the largest single philanthropic investment in UTA’s history.

This substantial donation aims to elevate UTA’s College of Engineering by supporting the new resource and energy engineering (REE) bachelor’s degree program. The funds will enhance faculty and research excellence and provide students with invaluable educational and career opportunities. Kelcy Warren, who graduated from UTA in 1978 with a degree in civil engineering, emphasized the importance of preparing graduates to manage energy resources efficiently, a critical need for Texas.

In recognition of Kelcy Warren’s generosity, UTA will name endowed academic positions, laboratory space, and a career experience center in his honor. The funding will facilitate the recruitment of distinguished faculty members and provide students with state-of-the-art resources to tackle pressing energy challenges. Additionally, scholarships and fellowships will be established to support undergraduates and graduates pursuing careers within the energy industry.

Scheduled to launch in fall 2023, the REE program is a pioneering initiative in the United States. It will be housed within the Electrical Engineering Department and will cover both conventional and renewable energy sources. The program is designed to ensure that graduates possess a comprehensive understanding of both engineering and business interests in the energy sector.

Kelcy Warren’s longstanding support for UTA spans over 25 years, during which he has contributed to various initiatives, including the Kelcy Warren Graduate Fellowship for Engineering. His latest gift underscores his commitment to fostering educational excellence and innovation at his alma mater, ultimately benefiting both the university and the broader community.
