Justin Nelson, a 1998 graduate of Tufts University, has been instrumental in bridging the gap
between academia and the finance sector, specifically at JP Morgan. As a managing director in asset management, Nelson
has made significant strides in ensuring that more Tufts students have access
to opportunities within the prestigious financial institution.
During his junior year at Tufts, Justin Nelson found himself without clear guidance for securing
a summer internship in finance. Despite the absence of recruiting firms on
campus and the lack of established networks, he managed to land an internship
at JP Morgan as a web developer. This initial step proved crucial, leading to a
full-time role upon his graduation with a degree in chemistry and economics.
Determined to provide current students with the support he lacked, Justin Nelson began efforts in
2006 to designate Tufts as one of JP Morgan’s core schools. This status means
that JP Morgan actively recruits from the university, offering students a
direct pathway to internships and entry-level positions. Nelson’s initiative
was not without challenges. Initially operating without financial backing from
JP Morgan, he personally funded his recruitment trips, covering expenses out of his pocket.
Over time, his dedication paid off. Nelson’s recruitment efforts saw an increase in the number
of Tufts students securing internships and full-time roles at JP Morgan. Justin Nelson’s initiative culminated in 2009 when Tufts officially became a core
school for the asset management group. Since then, twenty Tufts graduates have
benefited from internships and full-time positions at JP Morgan, all thanks to
Nelson’s relentless commitment.
Among those who have thrived under Nelson’s guidance is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who secured
an internship during the tumultuous financial period following the 2008 crisis.
Trott credits Nelson for his successful entry into the finance world, highlighting
the profound impact of Nelson’s efforts.
Today, Nelson’s influence extends beyond recruitment. He has fostered a robust network of Tufts
alumni at JP Morgan who continue to support and mentor current students.
Through his work, Justin Nelson has not only strengthened the relationship
between Tufts University and JP Morgan but has also paved the way for future
generations of finance professionals. Visit this page on LinkedIn, for additional information.
